Vegetarian labels
Packaged foods sold as vegetarian in Taiwan must show one of five official labels. Look for these characters on the pack.
| On the pack | Means |
|---|---|
| 全素 / 純素 | Vegan Plant-based only. No eggs or dairy, and none of the five pungent plants (onion family and similar). |
| 蛋素 | Ovo vegetarian Vegan plus egg. |
| 奶素 | Lacto vegetarian Vegan plus dairy. |
| 奶蛋素 | Lacto-ovo vegetarian Vegan plus egg and dairy. |
| 植物五辛素 | Plant-based, may include the five pungent plants Plant-based but may contain onion, garlic and similar. If it has milk or egg, the ingredient list must say so. |
The five pungent plants: 蔥、蒜、韭、蕎、興渠 (scallion, garlic, chives, rakkyo onion, and asafoetida). Since the rule took effect, the old phrase 素食可食 ("OK for vegetarians") is no longer allowed.
No health or allergy guarantee. These labels are a legal category for packaged food, not a health or allergy guarantee. Check the ingredient list (成分) and ask staff if you have an allergy. Hot food at the counter, such as oden or tea eggs, isn't covered.
